Mathematics

  • Students bring in family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. Adding fractions and forms of measurement using the amounts given in the recipes are the major concepts covered. Students then bring in the actual foods made from the recipes at the end of the unit or a "Family Reunion".

  • Graphing is used in many areas of this unit. Countries, dates of entry, and family members that immigrated are all graphed as well as many others. They then create a presentation on the information gathered.  Students use spreadsheets to create graphs and PowerPoint to present their findings.

Science

  • The transition lesson into the next integrated thematic unit is Simple Machines. Many famous inventors were immigrants and our next unit is the Age of Invention.   Students research a famous immigrant inventor and then give presentations dressed as that inventor sharing their invention. We follow up with a mini-unit on simple machines. You could easily create a larger focus in science by expanding upon the simple machine unit and have a competition between cooperative groups for the best use of simple machines combined together to complete a given task.
