Develop Evaluation Tool/Rubric
What evaluative criteria will be used to evaluate the student products and performances?

What is a rubric?
A rubric is a scaled set of criteria or guidelines for evaluating student products or performances.

Rubrics:

bulletprovide students with information about what is expected.
bulletincrease consistency in the rating of performances and products.
bulletprovide students with "road signs" - information about where they are in relation to where then need to be.

Creating a rubric:

Step 1: Determine your Performance Levels

The performance levels may be:

bulletdescriptors ( In Progress, Basic, Proficient, Advanced)
bulletnumbers (1,2,3,4)
bulletweighted points (5,10,15,17)

Step 2: Determine your categories, traits, or dimensions that will be evaluated.

bulletThe performance levels should:
bulletinclude key products, skills, and behaviors from your task.
bulletwhat is most important -- not what is easiest to score.

Step 3: Write the criteria for each category and level.

bulletIn a 4 point rubric (a rubric with 4 performance levels) write the criteria for level 3 first. The level 3 criteria should be your standard -- what you expect your students to be able to do.
bulletMake sure the criteria reflect the most valued elements of student performance.
bulletAre there clear distinctions between performance levels?
