Introduction

Look around you and what do you see?  You will see matter!  Yes, matter is all around you--from the air you're breathing, to the clothes you're wearing, to the toys you play with, and the food you eat. Use the Internet resources to answer the 10 questions that follow. When you have finished, answer the Big Picture that asks you to combine a lot of what you learned through the scavenger hunt into a "big picture."

 


Questions

  • What is matter?
  • Name the 3 states of matter.
  • List the properties/characteristics of a solid.
  • What is the special temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid?
  • List the properties/characteristics of gases.
  • What is the special temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas?
  • What is evaporation?
  • List the properties/characteristics of a liquid.
  • Tell how a solid can be changed a liquid.
  • Tell how a gas can be changed into a liquid.

These questions are available as a downloadable Word document. Use the printer icon or the File>Print command of your Internet browser to print a copy of the questions.


The Big Picture

Think about the different states of matter.  How do changes in the water cycle show the 3 states of matter? When you have finished, take some time to play this game of Matter Vocabulary Hangman:
