Reading Requirements
for Imagination Integration

Reading for pleasure is an important part of Imagination Integration. All students are required to have a chapter book at their seat for transition times, as well as for O.T.T.E.R. (Our Time To Enjoy Reading). O.T.T.E.R, a time set aside for sustained silent reading, is built in to our schedule somewhere each day.
Where can a you find a book? Well, in addition to the school library, students in Imagination Integration have access to well over 1,000 titles in our class library. We would also encourage regular trips to the public library as well. It is a wonderful source of new and classic titles, especially when looking for some of those pesky genre list books, like Folktales and Myths/Legends.
You might also check this site when looking for a good book to read, it is a searchable database of award-wining children's literature: Database of Award-Winning Children's Literature

We also take advantage of the opportunity to participate in the Scholastic Book Club. We believe this a terrific, and very affordable, chance for students to build their own library of great books. It also helps to increase the classroom library with titles all can share in. If you are new to book clubs please ask us for more details or visit the Scholastic Book Club's Parent's Guide to Book Clubs.

Parent Note:
Please make book order checks payable to "Scholastic Books".

At Home Reading Requirements:

Radical Reader - 320 minutes per month, or 20 minutes per night, four nights per week. Students may read whatever they choose, i.e. books, newspapers, kids magazines (such as, Sports Illustrated for Kids or Zoobooks). Each nights reading gets logged on the monthly Radical Reader sheet and is turned in by the third school day of the following month.

Genre Reading - Students must read one book (125 pages or longer) from each of the 12 Literature Genre on their Genre Reading Log by the end of the school year. To help encourage organizational skill development, the student must read from three different genre each nine weeks.
For example, Katie #32 might read one novel from Historical Fiction, one from Mystery, and one from Folktales during the first nine weeks. In the second nine weeks, Katie #32 might read a book of Short Stories, our class Poetry book, Kaleidoscope, and a Science Fiction thriller. And so on, and so forth. This avoids the last of the year rush to "catch-up" on genres not yet read.
Additionally, the students must complete a "You Be the Judge" book evaluation sheet for each of the genre books read. This sheet is completed in class (Although, they may work on them at home.) and gets put in the Library Genre Title Resource Book so other students can refer to it when looking for a particular genre title.

Student Note: All Radical Reader and Genre List requirements must be met in order to participate fully in each semester's "Read-In."
